Few of the students who attend Charleston’s lowest-performing schools can pass the rigorous Advanced Placement tests, but school leaders say they’re committed to changing that.

The school district has poured more than $ 600,000 into downtown Burke High during the past three years for its AP Academy, a program started in the fall of 2008 to give the school a needed academic boost. Only two students have earned “passing” scores to receive college credit during the past two years.

Burke High is the only county school with this kind of program and extra funding, but it’s not the only one with low pass rates. Six other Charleston schools didn’t have any student score high enough to “pass” the tests, and one other had fewer than five students “pass” the exams in 2011.

School leaders say that needs to improve.

“We have to elevate the quality of what’s going on in schools, including Burke High, and my goal is to level the playing field in terms of ensuring that every school has a portfolio of AP offerings,” said school Superintendent Nancy McGinley.
